After successfully completing your initial probationary year, you will be eligible to become a full member after a vote of approval from the membership. To maintain active membership status you must respond to 5% of all calls in a given year, attend four monthly meetings, maintain a current CPR card, complete an annual physical, and pay the annual $3 dues. If any member doesn't meet the minimum requirements in a given year, they return to probationary status for the following year.
Prospective members must submit an application and pass an arson background check. Once the arson investigation is complete, the prospective member will meet with the Gardiner Fire Department investigating committee for a pre-membership interview. After this meeting, the prospective member's application will be read before the membership at our monthly meeting (held the first Monday of each month). The membership will then vote to approve the applicant's membership request. With a majority of the membership voting "yes" the membership application will go before the Board of Commissioners for approval. Once the applicant is approved by the Board of Commissioners the applicant will be considered a probationary member.
No experience is required to join the Gardiner Fire Department. Through New York State, we offer free training locally for a wide range of certifications—from interior firefighter to rescue operations to emergency vehicle operations.
All members are also eligible to become EMT certified through a third-party partner. Courses are offered locally and free for Gardiner Fire Department members.
You are not required to hold a CPR card to become a member. However, all members must become CPR certified before they're allowed to respond to calls. We offer free CPR training for all GFD members.
Members of the Gardiner Fire Department are required to complete an annual physical. New members must complete there's within the first year of membership. Physicals are offered through two local medical partners and are free of charge to GFD members.
We respond to calls 24/7. Each member carries a pager with them and uses a smartphone app to received dispatch information. You are not required to be on call at any specific time. You choose to respond when you're available. You are not required to be at the station at any given time or required to respond during a specified time.
A new applicant's status during their first year of membership. Also the status of a member who doesn't meet the minimum requirements from membership in a previous year. Probationary members may attend all drills, meetings and events. They may respond to all fire, rescue and emergency calls. They are eligible for all state and third-party free training. Probationary members are not eligible to vote, nominate officers off the floor, bring motions before the membership, or run for officer.
